Researching My Problems

by Suzanne Somers 9/30/2009 12:45:00 PM
I am looking back on the roller coaster of last week and all the highs and lows that went with it.  After 17 years of a very gratifying relationship with HSN I started my first show with ShopNBC.  It was sort of like the first day of school.  You hope you like your teacher, your classmates, and you hope your hair looks good!  Thankfully, I am so comfortable in this new home with my new friends and support staff.  I couldn't ask for a more talented and exciting group of people and look forward to this relationship unfolding at ShopNBC.  At the same time the launch was taking place, some comments of mine on the passing of Patrick Swayze were published which led to a firestorm of response and dialog. Do we all accept what is reported and form opinions or do we ask questions to find out the entire story?  I have been in the public eye for a few decades now - and part of being a public person is knowing comments will be taken out of context or the intent will be twisted.  It's something you can't control and it comes with the territory.  It's particularly upsetting when people are hurt by these comments and that is why I issued an apology to Patrick's family.

Much has been printed about me, and contrary to many of the adverse comments, I do not fancy myself an authority on every subject.  That being said, as with each human on this earth, I have had my own personal obstacles.  Each time I am faced with a challenge I have researched the problems in order to overcome the adversity.  Whether it has been the issues I have faced being the child of an alcoholic, or trying to lose the weight I gained in my forties, or restoring balance to my life after menopause - I have committed many years of my life to finding answers, for myself.  At the end of each search, when I had found my own answers, I felt I had something to share and thought others might benefit from the work I had done for myself.

In Keeping Secrets - my book about growing up with an alcoholic dad - I uncovered how children of alcoholics share so many traits from enduring this experience.  I learned to move past those obstacles, to grow, and even forgive my abusive father.  I received tens of thousands of letters from people who thanked me for sharing my experience and told me that it had helped them with their own demons in some way.  That doesn’t make me an authority, but it connected me to people who had similar challenges and opened a dialog about how to overcome those challenges.

I also never planned on writing a series of weight loss books, but the extra pounds I was carrying evolved into nine weight loss books on a healthy lifestyle called Somersize.  Again, I found something that worked for me, and then my family and friends all wanted to know about it, so I wrote it down.  Again, that doesn't make me an authority – I just shared what worked for me and gave others the opportunity to see if it might work for them, too.  It did, in fact over 10 million people joined the movement and the letters of gratitude and the stunning before and after photos were deeply moving for me to see this was a solution for so many.  That doesn’t make it the only solution – but it worked for so many.

Then came the series of books on bio-identical hormones and anti-aging medicine - The Sexy Years, Ageless, and Breakthrough.  I met with hundreds of doctors, experts, and researchers in the medical and academic community.  I asked a lot of questions and tried to simplify the information until it made sense to me.  The resulting information was so compelling; I felt others might want the benefit of these interviews.  Most of us don't know where to begin to look for medical information, let alone have access to cutting-edge physicians.  I know having that information has changed the course of my life and my decisions on how I live each day.  I don't expect anyone to mimic my decisions - I just put out the information so individuals can make their own choices.

Dialog is important. Join me in asking the questions, doing the research and exploring the options.  Register at my web site, read my books and blogs, and get active in discussion with your caregivers to make sure your best interests are being met to your level of satisfaction.  Get active in the debate on health care!  The course of treatment we select is very personal and each of us has the right to make our own choice.  Again, I respect the choices Patrick, and millions of others, make each year on the course of care they choose. It is not my goal to sway anyone's opinion.  I just put out information for the taking.

More to come,

Suzanne

Two Scariest Women on the Planet - Oprah and Suzanne

by Suzanne Somers 6/4/2009 3:35:00 PM

Have you seen this week’s Newsweek magazine? Here we go again! They have a new article on how Oprah is giving "dangerous" advice by having uninformed guests give false information to the public.  First of all, how dare they alter Oprah’s image for that cover!  It’s out of focus, and they have obviously added bags and shadowing under her eyes to make her look crazed and scary.

In the article, I am listed as scary guest #1.  You know me, the very scary, Suzanne Somers!  Now Pat Wingert, the woman who wrote the first attack article in February, is at it again, attacking me for using natural bioidentical hormones.  She makes me sound like some whack-job idiot, even though I bombarded her, at her request, with dozens of studies showing the efficacy, safety and protective nature of these hormones, but she chose to ignore the data and not print any of the resources.

You might find it interesting that Pat Wingert, the journalist behind the Newsweek attacks, has written her own book on synthetic hormones.  I guess she has an agenda.  How can she call herself a journalist when she refuses to print the other side's position?  I sent her all the studies, back on Feb 12th, verifying the efficacy and safety of bioidentical hormones and the safety of estriol replacement.  I also stated to her at that time, I do not, DO NOT inject anything into my vagina.  She wrote the slam job in February and now she's re-writing it again.  So she did sloppy journalism and did not do her homework - even though she has my email and could have contacted me to verify information.  She never bothered.  Such is Newsweek Magazine.  Then they go after Jenny McCarthy for the work she is doing with autism.  Jenny is a friend of mine and she has done amazing work to bring about awareness and help to autistic families, but because Jenny theorizes that vaccinations may be a cause for autism being on the rise, Pat Wingert calls her crazy.

Here are just a few of the studies I sent to her on the safety of bio-identical hormones, in response to the first attack she made on me.  Read them and make your own decision.

Newsweek Attack - Huh? The Truth About Bioidentical Hormones vs. Synthetic

by Suzanne Somers 3/2/2009 4:40:00 PM

For years women have been offered what has been known as ‘hormones’ but are really horse’s urine whereby the molecular structure has been altered to produce a synthetic harmful chemical that has now been proven to have killed many women. So it’s difficult to understand why I am on the receiving end of pharmaceutical attacks. I am simply speaking out on behalf of natural hormones that have never harmed anyone. Natural ‘bioidentical’ hormones allow women and men to feel great, sometimes better than they ever have in their lives and the health benefits are tremendous. So who is off track here?

When a menopausal woman is in hormonal decline, the “menopausal cocktail” she is offered by doctors are: pharmaceutical anti-depressants, sleeping pills, anti-anxiety pills, pain killers and more. Drugs! Expensive drugs …when replacement of real, natural hormones can take away the uncomfortable and unhealthy symptoms.

Think about this… the symptoms arose when the hormones went into decline. Doesn’t it make sense that by putting back “exact replicas,” biologically-identical natural hormones that have been lost through the aging process or through stress, the symptoms would go away? The answer is yes.

Why, then, are the attacks against me so violent and persistent when the hormones I take and write about have never been known to harm anyone even though they have been used by thousands of people? Could it be that if we all figure out how well we can feel by replacing what has been lost by aging we won’t need any of their expensive drugs? Is it all about big business bottom line? You decide.

Being unfairly portrayed as in the case of the most recent
Newsweek article, it was not noted that I bombarded writer Pat Wingert (per her request) with dozens of studies showing the efficacy, safety and protective nature of these hormones; but she chose to ignore the data.

Of course, Newsweek should have put a writer on this article who did not have a conflict of interest. I should have been informed that Ms. Wingert and her boss had written a pharmaceutically biased book on hormones and menopause that was in direct conflict with my books and message. Newsweek should also inform their readers that they are heavily funded by pharmaceutical companies; it would then put the right slant on articles such as these.

My information all comes from the doctors I interview. I am, in essence, a filter for those cutting-edge western doctors who cannot be heard.

Ms. Wingert attacked compounding pharmacies and implied that compounded hormone drugs are “unregulated” and somehow unsafe. All compounding pharmacies must be licensed and are strictly regulated by State Pharmacy boards. The Newsweek article states that those prescribed compounded hormone drugs require frequent blood tests and office visits, which is correct. That is how the doctor can monitor the person’s needs. The prescribed synthetic FDA approved hormone drugs also require regular medical tests; so what’s the problem?

I believe the best way for a woman to replace hormones is by getting them at a compounding pharmacy because these bioidentical hormones can be customized perfectly to address the woman or man’s exact needs. FDA approved hormones CANNOT offer this relief. Also, in compounded pharmacies the doctor is able to prescribe Estriol as part of the estrogen component. Estriol is the important component in a woman’s body that, among other things, offers protection from cancer. There are many studies validating this, a fact that the Newsweek writer chose to ignore.

Why then did Wyeth Pharmaceuticals file a lawsuit with the FDA last year to insist that compounding pharmacies stop selling the bioidentical product Estriol? Why would they not want women to have that protection? Could it be because their pharmaceutical hormones do not contain Estriol, and that, in fact, it would then leave women on bioidenticals unprotected? You decide.

The brilliance of the pharmaceutical business template is that they fund just about every media outlet. How then can we laypeople ever get the real truth? Instead, we are convinced by ad after ad that we have “restless legs” and we need a little butterfly to sit on our shoulders to put us to sleep (Lunesta), that we have to have their cholesterol medicine which has serious negative side effects. It goes on and on.

Pharmaceuticals have their place. When you need them, they are a god -send. But the over-pharmaceutical-ization of Americans is our doom. The build-up of chemicals in our bodies is robbing the minds of our elders and sneaking up on the young unsuspecting ones. How tragic.

As a result of my natural hormone replacement, I do not need or require even one pharmaceutical drug. I am not the customer they want. I don’t make money for them. They are hoping that by constantly attacking me and sending their pharmaceutically paid doctors to discredit me, the readers of my books and those who watch me on TV will be frightened to follow my lead.

But I am simply a filter…. all my information is brought to me by western-trained doctors who have become disillusioned with the present standard of care and have no voice. The allopathic approach to health (and I use the word “health” advisedly because what we really practice as health care today is actually disease care) is not working. People are on more and more drugs and not getting better. The courageous doctors I have interviewed in my books, BREAKTHROUGH and AGELESS, are to be admired. They could make a lot more money pushing pharmaceuticals, but they care about true health by using “nature’s tools” as said by Dr. Jonathan Wright of Seattle.

Drugs should be reserved as the last resort in the practitioners back pocket. Drugs are excellent for pain, infection and mental illness and other conditions outside my scope. But at the moment drugs are over-prescribed and the build- up of chemicals is killing our brains. After a while this chemical build-up makes the patients whacky so that they can’t think, and that’s when we send them off to the nursing homes. If we don’t wake up, this is the terrible end that presently awaits all of us. And you can be sure, when the insurance dries up, the patient dies…after they have squeezed every last cent out of the family.

My position is very difficult and I am surprised to find myself in the middle of this controversy. I write books that help people. I never knew I was going to hit a nerve.

So I could go away, but I don’t think you “choose” a cause. I think it chooses you. I just wanted to feel good when I went into menopause and I didn’t want to take drugs. I was appalled at being offered antidepressants, sleeping pills, anti-anxiety drugs, joint and pain killers and on and on. When I found total and complete relief from natural non-drug hormones, when my quality of life returned by simply rubbing on this prescribed cream daily and I began to sleep 8 hours a night, my weight normalized, the depression went away, the sex drive returned, I thought wow, women and men need to know this. And that’s how it began.

Sincerely,

Suzanne Somers

Oprah!

by Suzanne Somers 1/29/2009 4:01:00 PM

Dear Friends,

Today was a big day for me; the privilege of appearing on Oprah’s show and then hearing her speak so enthusiastically about this way of treating menopause with bioidentical hormones was one of the thrills of my career. It has taken me 18 books to get this kind of enthusiasm, and my reaction was emotional. I told her, “Thank you for giving me this opportunity to get my message out;” and she said, “You’ve been out there for ten years; they have heard you.” I replied, “Yes, but it’s different through you.” And it is. Oprah is a spectacular person, and her success is because of her compassion and desire to make this world a better place.

Women are suffering. We have been dismissed for so long when complaining about lack of sleep and night sweats and all the rest of the terrible symptoms. We are told these symptoms are something to be “endured.” Dr. Streicher, the opposition on Oprah, claims that the bioidentical hormones I recommend through my doctors are drugs. As I said on the show, “I disagree…if bioidentical hormones are a drug, then why don’t they require a patent?”

Dr. Streicher works at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. A doctor affiliated with a hospital is not allowed to practice anything but allopathic medicine. That is why she was pushing pharmaceutical grade hormones. Her message was confusing to me; she was speaking of synthetic hormones then switched to calling them hormones, claiming that the term ‘bioidentical’ was not recognized (by the FDA).

It is simply semantics; as Oprah said, “Bioidentical is here to stay.” I said, “It is easier for we lay people to refer to them as bioidentical (biologically identical) and we don’t really care if the medical ‘standard of care’ profession recognizes it or not.”

According to Dr. Streicher, the hormones she was talking about (which was not clear) were the same as mine but hers were approved. Hers were pharmaceutical, I presume, bioidentical hormones. The problem with pharmaceutical grade hormones is the lack of individualization. I get mine from a compounding pharmacy where they make them up for my EXACT needs. It’s not enough to “get close” or to do “quite well.” Until you hit the “sweet spot,” as I have called it, it is not acceptable. I have been able to get my hormones in perfect ratio for my body, exactly what I require; and now every day is a good one.

I know all the information is confusing. I know when the doctors speak we feel obliged to listen because they are the experts. But are they? The playing field is level. They did not study this in medical school; and unless they have gone out of their way to go back to school and attend conferences and work with patients, it truly is like going to a plumber for a heart bypass. Doctors are professionals we hire to help us keep our bodies healthy. They are not gods and they do not have all the answers. We must do our homework and be informed and in tune with our bodies and our needs.

What I offer to you through my books are interviews with doctors who have chosen to specialize in bioidentical hormones. These doctors know their stuff, and I have spent countless hours interviewing them. It has been quite an education and I pass that knowledge along to you.

I feel great every day. I want you to have the same quality of life and you can if you are willing to make a few changes in your lifestyle.

By the way, if you go to
Life Extension on my website, they will provide a very reasonably priced blood test for all my ladies and men to determine your hormonal needs. Once they get the results, they will refer you to a qualified physician in your area. It’s as simple as that. And then you are on your way.

Information is power. Replacing hormones is about restoring your body to balance. The choice is restoration vs deterioration.

You have to replace your endocrine system daily to have quality of life once you start to decline in hormonal production or accept the deterioration that is the present template of aging. You do not have to suffer with symptoms with real natural replacement. You can kiss the Seven Dwarves away; “ Itchy, Bitchy, Sleepy, Sweaty, Bloated , Forgetful, and All Dried -Up!”

You really will be Sleeping Beauty (a good 8 hours a night) and wake up rested and feeling great. Life is to be enjoyed, but without hormones it just ain’t gonna happen!

Have a great day.

Sincerely,

Suzanne Somers

Oprah Called Me

by Suzanne Somers 10/10/2008 1:05:00 PM

This is the first blog I have ever done.  I realize that each day some great breakthrough happens in the changing face of medicine.

For instance, today Oprah Winfrey called me.  Yes, she called me!  She told me that she has read AGELESS and now BREAKTHROUGH and has gone to one of the recommended doctors in the back of the book and she cannot believe the renewed quality of life she is experiencing as a result.

This is the greatest thing that could have happened for women’s heath.

Women have not been taken care of relative to this passage and hormonal loss.  Oprah said to me, “If you and I, as famous women, have had such difficulty finding a doctor to take us seriously and who understands how  to give us back our quality of life, imagine what is happening with the average American woman.”  I agreed with her wholeheartedly.

The time has come, and I couldn’t be happier.  Through Oprah’s audience and appeal women will now hear about the joys of natural bioidentical hormone replacement and a true approach to health.

We women deserve to feel well and be healthy.  For me every day is a good one since I have replaced the hormones I have lost in the aging process.  As a result, I am enjoying these years and can honestly say, it’s the best my life has ever been.

I’ll let you know the air date… be sure to watch.

Sincerely,

Suzanne Somers
