Water Fluoridation - Get the Facts

by Suzanne Somers 8/27/2010 10:30:00 AM

Water fluoridation has always been a contentious issue, but it is becoming more common to hearmention of fluoride as a toxic substance in our everyday lives, and that it should be eliminated. The practice of fluoridating drinking water in North America began in 1945 ostensibly for thepurpose of reducing tooth decay, but it was initiated before proper studies had been performed to ensure the safety of ingesting fluoride over a lifetime.

Fluoride is added to water to bring it to an arbitrary level deemed necessary for healthy teeth. But fluoride is a toxin, not a nutrient. The proof is the massive increase in irreversible dental fluorosis (white or brown spots on the teeth) in children who drank fluoridated water as babies. Fluoride is an accumulative environmental and food chain pollutant. While less than 1% of fluoridated tap water is used for drinking, we are all exposed to a fluoride in various forms from many sources, including foods and drinks cooked or processed with it, pesticide residue on non-organic produce, air pollution, dental products, and pharmaceuticals, to name a few. Fluoride accumulates in our bodies, potentially harming the unborn, growing children, the medically compromised, and seniors the most. In spite of claims by the dental industry, fluoride does not prevent tooth decay - oral health is tied to income level and nutrition, not fluoride intake. The fluoridation chemicals in the unused water go back into the environment, accumulating in land and aquatic life.

Most health authorities suggest drinking at least eight glasses of water per day for good health. How much fluoride are you getting when you drink a glass of artificially fluoridated water? About the same as if you swallowed a pea-sized blob of toothpaste - which the label clearly tells you not to do. If it is not safe to swallow eight blobs of toothpaste with FDA-approved fluoride per day for life, or take eight pills containing this amount of fluoride, why are we told it’s OK to drink this amount of the diluted industrial waste that has never been FDA-approved for human consumption?

Yes, we are drinking diluted industrial waste. The product used for water fluoridation is a highlyt oxic waste recovered from the air pollution scrubbing systems of the phosphate fertilizer industry,as well as from other sources of industrial waste, including that from China. Wherever it issourced from, it is contaminated with lead, arsenic, and radioactive particles, among other very hazardous, accumulative contaminants.

Increasingly in the last few decades, citizens in North America and around the world have been learning the truth about water fluoridation and many are becoming active and vocal to protect themselves and their communities. In recent years, more and more communities have been removing fluoride from their drinking water, reversing a 60 year trend. Over 2600 professionalsso far have signed a statement requesting the end of water fluoridation. This information and more facts about water fluoridation can be found on the website of the Fluoride Action Network(FAN), at www.fluoridealert.org. While there are many good fluoride opposition websites, this website is the most comprehensive non-dental and non-governmental source of scientific information on fluoride and its health effects. It has thousands of supporters, including professionals in medicine, dentistry, environmental science as well as the US EPA Union of professional workers.

Canadian citizens can find further information about water fluoridation on the Canadian websites of http://www.waterloowatch.comand http://www.fluoridation.com.

Another organization, the national, educational non-profit Second Look, with its program the Fluoride Toxicity Research Collaborative (FTRC) has been addressing the issue of fluoride poisoning in individuals, and is the only organization developing a system to work with people who are ill from the effects of fluoride toxicity, a still unrecognized epidemic. See:http://www.SLweb.org. People usually decide against fluoridation when they are well informed with the facts. Get the facts - protect yourself and your community.

Sincerlely,

Look at this amazing letter from a couple who survived Mt. Everest by munching on SUZANNE Chocolate Espresso Beans!

by Suzanne Somers 7/29/2010 2:26:00 PM

Dear Suzanne Somers,

My husband and I just got back from a mountain trek to the Nepalese side of Mount Everest's basecamp. The trek was 14 days long, very strenuous and while the food we ate was all organic, we found ourselves battling stomach bugs after a couple of days. This would zap our energy and make the day's trekking very difficult, and require many unhappy trips to really smelly squat toilets.

Before leaving on our trip, I had packed some emergency food just for this potential problem. As I filled up some ziplocks with Clif Bars and single-serve peanut butter, I found a bag of chocolate-covered espresso beans a friend of mine had given me for Christmas. I looked closely at the bag and saw that they were made by Suzanne Somers! I thought, "hey, this would be a great surprise if we need energy and caffeine and most importantly, a chocolate fix!" I secretly packed them in my bag.

So after a couple days on the trail and after a particularily bad evening spent nursing an upset stomach, I decided to break them out and share them with my husband the following morning. It was the only thing we could manage to eat at that time. Not only are the beans delicious, they woke us up and gave us crazy energy that kept us going up that mountain for hours!

There after, instead of drinking coffee in the morning, we just ate your beans. Sadly, we ran out before the end of the trek, but you can be sure that for future mountain climbs, we will always have plenty of SUZANNE Chocolate Covered Espresso Beans
 in our backpacks!

Your fan forever and fellow blonde bombshell...

Bette

Stunning news report - Pfizer Gets Approval for Lipitor for Kids.

by Suzanne Somers 7/13/2010 4:16:00 PM

What!?!  Lipitor for kids?  See link below to read the full article.  I have written about the dangers of cholesterol lowering statins in my interview with Dr. Russell Blaylock (Breakthrough, Chapter 14), and wanted to get his opinion on this new development.  Here is the response he sent to me.

Dear Suzanne,

This is an attempt by the pharmaceutical companies to extend their profits. This is the most absurd and dangerous idea I could ever imagine. For one, it would lower cholesterol to dangerously low levels during a critical period of brain development. People's brains continue to develop until age 27. Cholesterol is essential for brain function (it makes up a critical part of neuron synapses called lipid rafts). Studies have shown that Lipitor, and the other statin drugs, can significantly interfere with this critical brain component. There are a great number of ways to reduce atherosclerosis that are much safer and cheaper than this dangerous drug. One should also consider that statins dramatically reduce immune function and lowering kids' immune function for a lifetime would greatly increase their risk of a number of infectious diseases as well as cancer.

Sincerely,

 Russell

I'd Kill for a Great Tan!

by Suzanne Somers 7/8/2010 11:23:00 AM

But should a great tan kill you?

Who doesn't feel great with a bit of a healthy glow? But what you don't know can kill you.  Literally.

As you've probably noticed, there's a lot of mixed messages out there about sun tanning, self-tanning, and tanning beds. The facts are clear.  There is no...I repeat NO...safe form of tanning when ultraviolet (UV) rays are involved.  That's because UV rays from the sun and tanning beds damage your skin, making you a lot more susceptible to squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, and the most dangerous forms of skin cancer...melanoma. And according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 65% to 90% of melanomas are caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays. And what's even more shocking? Even though it's preventable, nearly 9,000 Americans die from melanomas each year. Who wants that?! I know I don't!  And neither does Congress.  As part of Health Reform Act, Congress introduced a 10% tax on indoor tanning to offset the costs associated with health risks of tanning beds and tanning salon services.  And did you know that both the American Medical Association (ADA) and the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) want to ban the non-medical use of tanning equipment? And don't get me started on how old-fashioned tanning is the best way to age your skin and look like a shriveled prune!  I could write a whole series of blogs on that.

So enough with the bad news.  The good news is that there's a better AND natural way to get that great summertime glow without compromising your health and beauty.  I’m launching SUZANNE ORGANICS Golden Tanning Serum in mid July as a way to get a completely chemical-free tan with a 100% natural product. Yes, I said "no chemicals"!  Our Tanning Serum incorporates nature’s most remarkable ingredients to activate a tan from the inside out! Just like all my new products, I’ve made sure they are made from organic and Certifed ToxicFree® ingredients to protect your health.

SUZANNE ORGANICS Golden Tanning Serum's Key Ingredients include:

Monk’s Pepper Berry - a natural tanning activator from French Polynesia, that stimulates melanin production with sunlight
Acetyl Tyrosine – this natural amino acid acts as a suntan booster by enhancing skin’s pigmentation
Sugar Peptides – supports a healthy bronze colored tan, with or without sunlight

And if you've used self-tanning products before and been disappointed by the results, join the club.  That's another reason why I created this product.  Those spray-on tans stink! This serum has a lovely natural scent from coconut and mango.  It's really easy to apply. It won't leave a streaky mess like many products out there.  Plus, it lasts 3 times as long as DHA-only products.  And worried about that fake orangy look?  SUZANNE ORGANICS Golden Tanning Serum works with your own pigmentaion to give you a natural glow. And it's loaded with nurturing botanicals like aloe, green tea, coconut oil, and argan oil for optimum hydration.  It’s actually good for your skin, and did I mention, "NO CHEMICALS"?!

I'm really proud of this product.  Finally, we have a gorgeous, safe, and natural alternative that will make us feel like a California girl all year round.

Sincerely,

Suzanne Somers

Researching My Problems

by Suzanne Somers 9/30/2009 12:45:00 PM
I am looking back on the roller coaster of last week and all the highs and lows that went with it.  After 17 years of a very gratifying relationship with HSN I started my first show with ShopNBC.  It was sort of like the first day of school.  You hope you like your teacher, your classmates, and you hope your hair looks good!  Thankfully, I am so comfortable in this new home with my new friends and support staff.  I couldn't ask for a more talented and exciting group of people and look forward to this relationship unfolding at ShopNBC.  At the same time the launch was taking place, some comments of mine on the passing of Patrick Swayze were published which led to a firestorm of response and dialog. Do we all accept what is reported and form opinions or do we ask questions to find out the entire story?  I have been in the public eye for a few decades now - and part of being a public person is knowing comments will be taken out of context or the intent will be twisted.  It's something you can't control and it comes with the territory.  It's particularly upsetting when people are hurt by these comments and that is why I issued an apology to Patrick's family.

Much has been printed about me, and contrary to many of the adverse comments, I do not fancy myself an authority on every subject.  That being said, as with each human on this earth, I have had my own personal obstacles.  Each time I am faced with a challenge I have researched the problems in order to overcome the adversity.  Whether it has been the issues I have faced being the child of an alcoholic, or trying to lose the weight I gained in my forties, or restoring balance to my life after menopause - I have committed many years of my life to finding answers, for myself.  At the end of each search, when I had found my own answers, I felt I had something to share and thought others might benefit from the work I had done for myself.

In Keeping Secrets - my book about growing up with an alcoholic dad - I uncovered how children of alcoholics share so many traits from enduring this experience.  I learned to move past those obstacles, to grow, and even forgive my abusive father.  I received tens of thousands of letters from people who thanked me for sharing my experience and told me that it had helped them with their own demons in some way.  That doesn’t make me an authority, but it connected me to people who had similar challenges and opened a dialog about how to overcome those challenges.

I also never planned on writing a series of weight loss books, but the extra pounds I was carrying evolved into nine weight loss books on a healthy lifestyle called Somersize.  Again, I found something that worked for me, and then my family and friends all wanted to know about it, so I wrote it down.  Again, that doesn't make me an authority – I just shared what worked for me and gave others the opportunity to see if it might work for them, too.  It did, in fact over 10 million people joined the movement and the letters of gratitude and the stunning before and after photos were deeply moving for me to see this was a solution for so many.  That doesn’t make it the only solution – but it worked for so many.

Then came the series of books on bio-identical hormones and anti-aging medicine - The Sexy Years, Ageless, and Breakthrough.  I met with hundreds of doctors, experts, and researchers in the medical and academic community.  I asked a lot of questions and tried to simplify the information until it made sense to me.  The resulting information was so compelling; I felt others might want the benefit of these interviews.  Most of us don't know where to begin to look for medical information, let alone have access to cutting-edge physicians.  I know having that information has changed the course of my life and my decisions on how I live each day.  I don't expect anyone to mimic my decisions - I just put out the information so individuals can make their own choices.

Dialog is important. Join me in asking the questions, doing the research and exploring the options.  Register at my web site, read my books and blogs, and get active in discussion with your caregivers to make sure your best interests are being met to your level of satisfaction.  Get active in the debate on health care!  The course of treatment we select is very personal and each of us has the right to make our own choice.  Again, I respect the choices Patrick, and millions of others, make each year on the course of care they choose. It is not my goal to sway anyone's opinion.  I just put out information for the taking.

More to come,

Suzanne

Farrah, We Will Miss You

by Suzanne Somers 6/25/2009 11:40:00 AM

Farrah was a beautiful person.. she was the first person to inspire us to exercise and stay fit.  We all remember the golden haired girl in the tennis dress... and wanted what she had. She lived a fabulous life and loved fiercely.  Her relationship with Ryan was one of great passion and is the stuff of legends.  She will always be remembered as the "it" girl of our times.

I knew Farrah and know how fiercely she fought to live.  It is a life unfinished but she will never be forgotten, such was her impact.

My deepest condolences to Ryan O'Neal and her son, Redmond.  My condolences also to Farrah's father who has now lost two daughters to this terrible disease.

And my deepest admiration to Farrah's best friend, Alana Stewart, who showed the world what it means to be a truly good friend. I am filled with sadness today... Farrah was so young, so talented, so beautiful and so loved.  We lost a great star today who was in her prime and I will miss her.

Her passing only dedicates me more to my work on anti-aging medicine and finding alternative treatments to fight this insidious killer.  Farrah's story should have had a different ending....

Sincerely,

Suzanne Somers
