1. Q: CAN I EAT ANY MEAT I WANT?
A: Yes, just make sure it is not cured with sugar. (Pork is most often the culprit.) Watch out for cold cuts and be sure to read the ingredients list.
2. Q: CAN I USE REGULAR TURKEY SAUSAGE FOR YOUR STUFFING RECIPE?
A: Yes. Feel free to improvise any of my recipes as long as you stay within the same food groups.
3. Q: CAN WE HAVE OYSTERS?
A: Oysters have trace amounts of carbohydrates, but it should not be enough to inhibit your progress on Level One. Beware of fried oysters, because they are usually coated in flour.
4. Q: CAN I EAT SUGAR-CURED MEATS?
A: Generally try to avoid sugar-coated hams, because they can be quite high in sugar. Many sausages have small amounts of sugar, and I have found that it has not been a problem to include them on Level One. Use your own body as a guide.
5. Q: IF I CAN'T USE LAMB, WHAT MEAT CAN BE SUBSTITUTED?
A: Beef, chicken, pork, or whatever you like.
6. Q: I'M FINDING DEXTROSE LISTED IN THE INGREDIENTS IN MANY MEAT PRODUCTS. ISN'T THIS A FORM OF SUGAR AND NOT ALLOWED?
A: Sometimes packaged cold cuts have dextrose and other sweeteners. It's best to get fresh cold cuts from a deli, because it's healthier. However, I doubt the small amount of dextrose in meat will affect your weight loss.
7. Q: IN YOUR PORK RECIPES, CAN I SUBSTITUTE BEEF FOR THE PORK?
A: Absolutely. Feel free to make substitutions that fit your liking and your budget.
8. Q: IS BEEF JERKY ALLOWED?
A: Beef jerky is usually made with some kind of sugar, but some are dried and seasoned without any sugar or sweeteners. As always, check the ingredient list. If there are no Funky Foods on the ingredient list you may have it.
9. Q: IS IT OKAY TO EAT STORE-BOUGHT BUFFALO WINGS WITH BLUE CHEESE DRESSING AND CELERY?
A: Check the ingredients list; as long as there is no sugar and flour, they are fine. I fry my own wings, then toss them in hot sauce and dip in my homemade blue cheese dressing.
10. Q: IS LIVERWURST OR BRAUNSCHWEIGER ALLOWED?
A: No. Liverwurst and braunschweiger are both made from liver, with is a Funky Food because it has protein, fat, and carbohydrate. You may enjoy liver on Level Two without a problem.
11. Q: IS SUSHI OKAY TO EAT ON LEVEL ONE? I COMMONLY HAVE THE CALIFORNIA ROLL . . . BUT THERE IS A VEGETARIAN ROLL WITH JUST CUCUMBER, WHITE RICE, AND SEAWEED. IS THIS OKAY? WHAT ABOUT THE WASABI (HORSERADISH PASTE) AND LIGHT SOY SAUCE? DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGG
A: As you know, white rice is a Funky Food, since it spikes your insulin level, and is therefore not allowed on Level One. The cucumber, seaweed, wasabi and soy sauce are all fine. You may want to try sashimi, which is sushi without the rice. You could also have buckwheat noodles with steamed vegetables and soy sauce. Or have chicken or steak grilled with oil and soy sauce with some vegetables. Steer clear of teriyaki sauce, as it's full of sugar.
12. Q: IS CANNED CHICKEN OKAY? ALSO, HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT CANNED TUNA? HOW MUCH MAYO SHOULD I ADD TO THESE SALADS?
A: As long as there are no added sugars or starches in canned chicken it is okay. It's certainly not as healthy as fresh, but it's okay for Somersizing. Every now and then I enjoy a can of tuna fish mixed with mayonnaise and celery. You can use as much mayo as you want as long as you are eating all Pro/Fats and Veggies.
13. Q: I'VE HAD A HARD TIME FINDING BACON OR SAUSAGE THAT ISN'T SUGAR-CURED OR DOESN'T CONTAIN SUGAR OR SOME TYPE OF CORN SYRUP SOLIDS. CAN YOU SUGGEST A FEW OBTAINABLE BRANDS? I TRAVEL A LOT, AND HOTEL BREAKFAST BUFFETS HAVE FLUFFY SCRAMBLED EGGS AND FRIED
A: The trace amounts of sugar in bacon and sausage shouldn't affect your weight loss. The small amount of milk probably added to the scrambled eggs would create a very minor imbalance, so they should be fine.
