1. Q: ARE EGG BEATERS ALLOWED TO BE USED WITH CARBOS? AS AN EXAMPLE, IN MUFFINS, PANCAKES AND SUCH OR SERVED WITH WHOLE WHEAT TOAST?
A: Egg Beaters are 99% egg whites and 1% crap. I am not an Egg Beaters fan. Real eggs are one of nature's most perfect foods. They are an excellent source of protein and the egg yolk has all the essential Omega 3 Fatty Acids. If you want to include Egg Beaters, they would be considered a Pro/Fat. Personally, I would not use them in any group. I know you are hoping for more ways to expand your Carbo meals, but I don't want to give you more options for Carbo meals. You will be much healthier and much thinner if you choose the Pro/Fats meals.
2. Q: ARE HEAVY CREAM AND LIGHT CREAM BOTH CONSIDERED PRO/FATS?
A: Most likely, yes, but check the ingredients for hidden sugars.
3. Q: CAN I HAVE WHIPPED CREAM WITH A PRO/FATS MEAL?
A: Absolutely, if it is made without sugar.
4. Q: CAN I HAVE YOGURT?
A: Yogurt with Grape Nuts is a nice snack or breakfast; however the yogurt must be plain or vanilla with no sugar, nonfat and no added thickening agents containing any type of starch.
5. Q: CAN I USE "I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S NOT BUTTER" SPRAY ON WHOLE WHEAT BREAD? IF NOT, IS THERE ANOTHER FAT FREE SPRAY I CAN USE?
A: I don't recommend these fat-free sprays because they are made from fake foods. You'll be amazed at how much better you'll feel when you eliminate all these chemicals from your life. As for Somersizing, this spray will cause a modest imbalance on Level One with your toast. Technically it's not allowed, but use your body as a guide. If you are steadily losing, you can include it as long as your progress continues. Me? I'll have my bread warm with a slice of tomato, or with some non-fat cottage cheese. On Level Two I'll use some real butter.
6. Q: CAN I USE COOKING SPRAYS SUCH AS PAM?
A: Pam is simply vegetable oil in a spray can. You may use it freely as a Pro/Fat.
7. Q: CAN YOU GIVE ME INFORMATION ABOUT WHERE TO FIND PAVEL'S YOGURT?
A: The yogurt is sold pretty much only in California at Whole Foods, with the exception of parts of Arizona and New Mexico. In Northern California, they sell the yogurt at Safeway. There is no mail order because it is too small a quantity and it also shakes up the yogurt. They are currently working on selling it in Dallas and Chicago. Another readily available brand is Dannon.
8. Q: CAN YOU USE THE NON-FAT MILK IN A CAN, LIKE CARNATION, FOR YOUR CARBO MEAL?
A: If the only ingredient is nonfat milk, yes, it's a Carbo. If it's a Carnation Drink filled with sugar and such, then the answer is no.
9. Q: EGG WHITE ARE PRO/FATS, BUT BECAUSE THEY DON'T CONTAIN FAT, CAN'T I EAT THEM WITH THE CARBOS?
A: Technically the answer is no. Egg whites are still a protein and should only be eaten with Pro/Fats and Veggies.
10. Q: I CANNOT SEEM TO LOSE WEIGHT. I AM USING HEAVY CREAM IN ROOT BEER AND ON STRAWBERRIES. SO, I ACTUALLY AM USING A LOT OF HEAVY CREAM. COULD THIS BE THE PROBLEM? I THOUGHT HEAVY CREAM IN QUANTITIES IS OKAY.
A: The cream itself is probably not the problem. Remember you should only mix fats (cream) with berries if you are losing well as it causes a slight imbalance. You can have the two, just not together. Also there are chemicals in the root beer, so I would suggest you avoid this also until you are losing well.
11. Q: I HAVE BEEN USING MOLLY MCBUTTER FOR YEARS AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR BUTTER AND WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF IT FITS INTO YOUR PROGRAM, AND IF SO, WOULD YOU CONSIDER IT A CARB? MOLLY MCBUTTER IS GREAT ON VEGGIES.
A: Substitutes for butter are generally filled with chemicals, so I would suggest that you put the substitutes aside and use real butter.
12. Q: I HAVE BEEN USING PROMISE FAT FREE MARGARINE, WHICH HAS NO TRANS FATTY ACIDS. IS THIS ALL RIGHT FOR SOMERSIZING?
A: I do not like margarine, but at least this one does not have trans fatty acids. You may use margarine, but real butter is a better choice. Remember that even though this has no fat, it should still be treated as a Pro/Fat.
13. Q: I HAVE JUST STARTED SOMERSIZING AND WOULD LIKE TO KNOW ABOUT LACTOSE-FREE SKIM MILK AND HOW I CAN KEEP IT IN MY DIET, I.E., SHOULD I ONLY USE IT WITH CARBOS OR BECAUSE IT'S LACTOSE-FREE CAN I ALSO USE IT WITH PRO/FATS?
A: You would need to consider this as a Carbo. Treat it just like regular skim milk.
14. Q: I NOTICED ON THE LABEL OF HALF AND HALF THAT IT DOES STATE MILK AND CREAM AS THE INGREDIENTS (THUS WE WOULD ASSUME CARBOS IN THE MILK). HOWEVER, ON THE LABEL IS STATES 0 CARBOS, SO WHICH IS IT? CAN I USE HALF AND HALF AND BE SAFE NOT TO SPIKE INSULIN
A: Technically half and half is a combination of cream and milk. Since milk has carbohydrates and cream has fat they should not be eaten together. However, if you can only find cream with added sugars, certainly half and half would be a better choice. If you are steadily losing weight, you should be able to incorporate a small amount of it without a problem. I would not substitute large amounts of cream for half and half because then those carbs may start adding up. Hunt for pure cream. If it is too thick, thin it down some with a bit of water. It is curious that no carbohydrates were listed on the nutritional panel of the half and half. Perhaps because the serving size was very small.
15. Q: I USED TO PUT A BANANA IN MY MORNING SMOOTHIE FOR A THICKER CONSISTENCY. I ALSO PUT IN NON-FAT VANILLA YOGURT FOR A LITTLE FLAVOR AND CONSISTENCY. I CAN LIVE WITHOUT THE BANANA BUT CAN I STILL USE SOME YOGURT IN THE SMOOTHIE? I LIKE TO START MY DAY W
A: You cannot combine non-fat yogurt (Carbo) with Fruit on Level One. You could make a decaf coffee and non-fat yogurt smoothie with some ice cubes. If you want a Fruit smoothie, it must be all fruit. If you want a non-fat yogurt smoothie, it must be all Carbos. As far as water, you need to replenish your body after a run, so drink it before your smoothie.
16. Q: IF I MAKE A SPINACH DIP WITH NONFAT SOUR CREAM, COULD THAT BE A CARBO/VEGGIES MEAL AND SERVED WITH WHOLE WHEAT BREAD?
A: Yes, and it sounds great. Try it with pita bread triangles.
17. Q: IS NONFAT FROZEN YOGURT IN THE SAME CATEGORY AS REGULAR YOGURT?
A: Nonfat frozen yogurt is filled with sugar and definitely a no-no for Somersizing. There are some nonfat frozen yogurts that are also sugar-free. Technically you can have this because it is made from nonfat dairy products and artificial sweetener. Please use good judgment when you choose to include products filled chemicals. It's great to have a treat like this every now and then on Level One, but don't overdo it! Even on Level Two, you are much better off having real ice cream (made from milk, cream, eggs and sugar) rather than nonfat frozen yogurt which is filled with sugar and starch or artificial sweeteners to make up for the missing fat.
18. Q: IS NONFAT MILK THE SAME AS SKIM MILK? IS SKIM MILK A FUNKY FOOD?
A: Nonfat milk is the same as skim milk. It may also be called fat free. It is not a funky food, but it is considered a carbo and should only be used with carbos.
19. Q: IS NONFAT PLAIN YOGURT ALLOWED, EVEN THOUGH IN THE NUTRITIONAL PANEL IT SAYS THERE ARE 16 MORE OR LESS GRAMS OF SUGAR?
A: As I always say, check the ingredient list, not the nutritional panel. If there are no added sugars, it is fine. The reason you see sugars in the nutritional panel is because non-fat milk has carbohydrates, which convert to sugar upon digestion. That is why non-fat yogurt is grouped as a Carbo.
20. Q: IS SOUR CREAM ALLOWED ON LEVEL ONE?
A: Yes, full fat sour cream is a Pro/Fat. Nonfat sour cream is a carbo.
21. Q: ONE OF THE INGREDIENTS IN SKIM MILK IS SUGAR. IS THAT STILL OKAY?
A: Your skim milk should not list sugar in the ingredient list. If it does, I would look for another brand. It may, however, list "Sugars" on the nutritional panel. This is because milk has carbohydrates and natural sugars. That is why we list nonfat milk with the Carbos. It is perfectly fine to eat food in the approved Carbos list even if you see Sugars appearing on the nutritional panel.
22. Q: SHOULD I USE MARGARINE?
A: Even though margarine is listed as a pro/fat, you may want to avoid it because of the trans fatty acids. Also try to avoid any food that has the word "hydrogenated" on the package. Adding hydrogen to fat makes it a cheap filler for the producer. Unfortunately it raises your LDL cholesterol (bad) and lowers your HDL cholesterol (the good one that helps get rid of the bad). It's a personal choice, but at least you're informed.
23. Q: WHAT ABOUT LOW FAT DAIRY PRODUCTS?
A: Low fat milk is not included in this program because it contains fat and carbohydrates. Low fat cheese contains less fat and usually no carbohydrates. But full fat cheese tastes so much better and is perfectly okay on Level One.
24. Q: WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE LACTOSE INTOLERANT?
A: Obviously, you need to eliminate the dairy items that cause a problem for you. You may substitute nonfat soy or nonfat rice milk in the Carbos group. Otherwise, enjoy all the wonderful meats, vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Good luck.
25. Q: WHAT IS THE LEAST HARMFUL WAY TO EAT NONFAT YOGURT WITH FRUIT AT THE BOTTOM?
A: Fruit should be eaten by itself. If you want to have yogurt, you should have the plain nonfat yogurt. The least amount of imbalance from yogurt with fruit would be to have nonfat yogurt with fresh berries. Yogurt with fruit at the bottom is filled with sugar. It's definitely a no-no.
26. Q: WHEN DRINKING DECAF GREEN TEA OR DECAF HERBAL TEA, ARE THE RULES THE SAME AS THEY ARE WITH DECAF COFFEE CONCERNING EITHER HEAVY CREAM OR NONFAT MILK? CAN EITHER CREAM OR MILK BE USED WITH EACH OF THEM DEPENDING ON THE KIND OF MEAL THEY ARE GOING WITH
A: The rules remain the same for decaf tea as for coffee. Use skim milk as a Carbo and cream as a Pro/Fat. The same guidelines apply for switching between food groups. Wait three hours when switching between food groups.
27. Q: WHERE DOES BUTTERMILK FIT INTO SOMERSIZING?
A: Buttermilk is a Funky Food because it has fat and carbohydrates, just like whole milk or low fat milk. It will be added to the Funky Food list.
