Somersize - Pretzels, Nuts, Crackers, Snacks. Seeds
1. Q: ARE NUTS OKAY TO EAT?
A: Nuts are a Funky Food. When you get to Level Two, you can enjoy them in moderation.
2. Q: ARE SESAME SEEDS ALLOWED?
A: Sesame seeds have carbohydrate and fat, so technically they are a Funky Food. They only create a slight imbalance. If you are doing well on Level One, you probably will not have a problem if you decide to include a few with your Pro/Fat & Veggie meals, or with your Carbo meals. Tahini is a puree of sesame seeds and should be treated similarly.
3. Q: ARE TRISCUITS LEGAL TO HAVE AS A SNACK? THE INGREDIENTS ARE WHOLE WHEAT, PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED SOYBEAN OIL AND SALT.
A: Because Triscuits contain both whole wheat and oil, they combine Carbos and Pro/Fats, which is not allowed on Level One.
4. Q: ARE WATER CHESTNUTS AND BAMBOO SHOOTS FUNKY FOODS, OR CAN I USE THEM IN STIR FRY?
A: They are fine for a stir-fry. They have been added to the vegetable list.
5. Q: CAN FLAX SEED BE EATEN? CAN IT BE USED FOR AN OIL REPLACEMENT IN BREAD?
A: Flax seed has similar qualities to other nuts and seeds... they contain fat and carbohydrate. These foods have many health benefits, but in Level One we like to keep fats and carbohydrates separate. Of all the imbalances, these Combo-Foods create only a minor imbalance. If you are doing well on Level One you may incorporate flax seed without a problem. On Level Two it is perfectly fine. Flax seed would be delicious in bread and would only create the slightest imbalance. Let me know how it works!
6. Q: CAN YOU SUGGEST A CRACKER I CAN EAT?
A: I don't eat crackers, but just look at the ingredient list. Many are made with added oils so they are not okay. I think RyCrisp is okay. Myself, I'd rather have a piece of cheese or celery sticks dipped in blue cheese dressing.
7. Q: CAN YOU SUGGEST SOME SNACKS THAT DO NOT HAVE TO BE REFRIGERATED LIKE CHEESE DOES?
A: There are individually wrapped cheeses that are okay out of the refrigerator for quite some time. Hard-boiled eggs are OK for a couple of hours without refrigeration. If you're snacking on an empty stomach, fruit is great. Veggies, again, are an excellent snack option. If you're looking for a Carbo snack, try whole-wheat pretzels with no fat.
8. Q: HOW MUCH TIME SHOULD ELAPSE BEFORE I HAVE A SNACK?
A: Snacks follow the same guidelines as meals. If you have a Pro/Fats breakfast, you may have a Pro/Fats snack at any time afterwards. If you have a Pro/Fats meal and want a Carbos snack you must wait 3 hours. The reverse is true if you have a Carbos meal and want a Pro/Fats snack, you must wait 3 hours.
9. Q: I AM HAVING A DIFFICULT TIME TRYING TO PACK A LUNCH AND SNACKS FOR MY HUSBAND. ANY SUGGESTIONS?
A: Some good snacks would be fruit, veggies and dip or cheese. For lunch, he could take grilled chicken breast, left-over meatloaf or roast beef, sliced meat wrapped in cheese, a bowl of chicken or tuna salad with tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers and other veggies. He can even go to a burger joint and have a couple of hamburgers or cheeseburgers... without the bun. He can have a taco salad without the tortillas, beans or guacamole.
10. Q: SPELT PRETZELS HAVE .5 GRAM OF FAT FOR 18 PRETZELS. WOULD THAT BE TOO MUCH TO INCLUDE ONE LEVEL ONE?
A: The trace amount of fat should not affect your weight loss. It's a very minor imbalance.
11. Q: FOUND SOMETHING IN THE HEALTH STORE CALLED TARO ROOT CHIPS. THEY ARE FRIED AND SEEM TO RESEMBLE POTATO CHIPS. ARE THEY ALLOWED?
A: Taro is a very starchy root that is grown in Hawaii. Unfortunately, the high starch content makes it a Funky Food that is not allowed on Level One.
12. Q: IF I EAT A SMALL SNACK OR TREAT (ON LEVEL 2), DO I STILL HAVE TO WAIT 3 HOURS BEFORE EATING A DIFFERENT TYPE OF MEAL? IF I EAT A COUPLE SQUARES OF DARK CHOCOLATE, DO I WAIT THREE HOURS TO EAT A PRO/FATS DINNER? OR IF I HAVE ICE CREAM (LEVEL 2), DO I
A: In Level Two, we loosen the reins a bit, so you can ease up on the amount of time between switching to a different type of meal. Just know that you're creating a minor imbalance by changing from one type to another without waiting the full three hours, and keep it in check.
13. Q: IS POPCORN ALLOWED WITH A CARBO MEAL?
A: Popcorn is a Funky Food, and is therefore not allowed on Level One. If you'd like to have it on Level Two as a treat, it's best to eat it alone.
14. Q: WHAT ABOUT SUNFLOWER SEEDS?
A: Sunflower seeds belong in the same category with nuts and seeds. They have carbohydrate and fat, so technically they are a Funky Food. They only create a slight imbalance. If you are doing well on Level One, you probably will not have a problem if you decide to include a few with your Pro/Fat & Veggie meals, or with your Carbo meals.
15. Q: WHAT CAN I SNACK ON BETWEEN A CARBO MEAL AND A PRO/FAT MEAL SO I DON'T GET SUCH AN EMPTY BLOATED STOMACH?
A: Two to three hours after your Carbo meal, you could snack on a hard-boiled egg, a piece of cheese, or maybe some fruit. Of course, veggies and dip are always a great snack!
