Somersize - Soups, Sauces
1. Q: AM I ALLOWED MISO SOUP WITH SEAWEED?
A: Yes.
2. Q: CAN CANNED SOUPS BE EATEN ON THE SOMERSIZE PLAN?
A: Canned soups can be eaten if all of the ingredients fall into either the Pro/Fats and Veggies category or the Carbos and Veggies category. It's rare to find a canned soup that falls strictly into one of those categories, so, again, check those labels!
3. Q: CAN I EAT CAMPBELL'S TOMATO SOUP (CANNED)? I WOULD ADD CREAM TO THE SOUP INSTEAD OF WATER AND WOULD HAVE A CHUNK OF CHEESE. I WOULD MAKE THIS A PRO/FATS & VEGGIES MEAL.
A: Sorry, but not allowed. When in doubt, always check your ingredients. In this case you will see it contains corn syrup and wheat flour, which would make it funky.
4. Q: CAN I HAVE CANNED OR JARRED GRAVY IF IT SAYS IT IS 98% FAT FREE?
A: As always, check the ingredients, but I doubt it. Gravy almost always contains white flour or cornstarch, both of which are Funky Foods. In this case, there have probably been even more starches added to make up for the fat being removed.
5. Q: CAN YOU EAT SOUR CREAM WITH YOUR PROTEINS AND FATS?
A: Yes, sour cream is a Pro/Fat.
6. Q: CAN YOU RECOMMEND A GOOD FAT-FREE PASTA SAUCE TO USE WITH CARBO MEALS?
A: Yes, Somersize Pasta Sauce! Also, check out the fat-free pasta sauce recipes in my books--they're quick, easy, and delicious.
7. Q: I HAVE A GREAT TOMATO SOUP RECIPE BUT IT CALLS FOR 1/4 TSP. HONEY. IS THIS ENOUGH TO WORRY ABOUT? SUPPOSEDLY IT'S TO COUNTER THE ACID FROM THE 12 FRESH TOMATOES.
A: Try a bit of SomerSweet instead. I use a touch in my tomato sauce to balance the acid.
8. Q: MY MOTHER RECENTLY MADE A POT OF HOMEMADE CHICKEN SOUP. SHE MAKES HER SOUP WITH FRESH CUT POTATOES. IS IT OK TO EAT THE SOUP IF I PICK OUT THE POTATOES, OR DOES IT STILL AFFECT THE CARBOS IN THE SOUP?
A: The best cooks know that adding potato to your broth makes it nice and rich. Unfortunately, the starch that cooks into the soup from the potatoes is technically going to spike your insulin. If you were to follow the Level One guidelines to the letter, you could not eat the soup. However, as we always say, experiment with your own body and see if eating this soup affects your weight loss. If you are steadily losing weight, you may be able to incorporate this soup, in moderation, without a problem.
9. Q: ARE CREAM SOUPS, LIKE CAMPBELL'S CREAM OF CHICKEN OR CREAM OF MUSHROOM SOUP ALLOWED?
A: If you ever have a question, just look at the ingredient list. Cream, chicken, and mushrooms are all allowed on Pro/Fats and Veggies list; however, I believe these soups have cornstarch in them, so these soups would be okay for Level Two, not Level One.
