Somersize - Soy
1. Q: CAN I USE SOY SAUCE?
A: Yes, soy sauce is a free food that may be used on Pro/Fats, Carbos and Veggies. Make sure you buy a brand that does not list sugar or corn syrup in the ingredients.
2. Q: I BUY SOY MILK THAT HAS 3% FAT. IS THAT OKAY, OR DOES IT HAVE TO HAVE NO FAT? I REALLY DON'T WANT TO DRINK COW'S MILK.
A: Look for nonfat soy milk and use it as a Carbo. We want to avoid fat with our Carbos on Level One.
3. Q: I WAS WONDERING ABOUT A SOY BEAN CALLED EDAMAME. ARE THESE ALLOWED WHILE SOMERSIZING?
A: Edamame are wonderful snacks, full of nutrition, protein and healthy fats. Unfortunately they also contain more carbohydrate than the low starch vegetables in our Veggies group. Therefore, technically, you must save them for Level Two. However, they only cause a small imbalance so if you are losing steadily on Level One you could try to incorporate them and see if your body reacts.
4. Q: IF I FOLLOWED YOUR PROGRAM BUT HAD A SOY LATTE OR TWO A DAY, WOULD THAT BE COUNTERPRODUCTIVE?
A: If you want a soy latte, switch and have a decaf soy latte. If you just have to have your caffeine, you won't see results as quickly. You're still reducing the effects of insulin by Somersizing, so it's better than not doing anything. Pro/Fats and Veggies meals are far more satisfying than Carbos meals. That is why I recommend you eat Carbos only for breakfast and stick to Pro/Fats and Veggies for lunch and dinner.
5. Q: IS SOY FLOUR PERMISSIBLE FOR FRYING FOODS?
A: Soy flour is still starch and on Level One we do not mix starches with fats (oil). Try frying your foods without any flour. It still has a great flavor, and I don't miss the floury crust. You could try the soy flour for frying in Level Two.
6. Q: WHAT ABOUT SOY MILK AND OTHER SOY PRODUCTS, LIKE SOY NUTS?
A: Nonfat soy milk is included in the carbo group because it has carbs without fat. Regular soy milk, tofu and soy nuts are considered Funky Foods because they contain protein, fat and carbs. If you are a strict vegetarian and you need additional protein sources, I make an exception with tofu and soy products because the carbohydrate content is not terribly high. In addition, in Level Two, these are some of the first foods I encourage you to put back into your eating plan because soy has such important nutrients.
