Somersize - Sugar, Sweeteners
|
| | 1. |
Q: ARE SWEETENERS LIKE BROWN RICE SYRUP AND BARLEY MALT ACCEPTABLE? IF SO, WHAT ARE THEY CONSIDERED? |
| A: These sweeteners have a lower glycemic index than sugar, but they do have some natural sugars. Use sparingly, if you must. |
|
| | 2. |
Q: CAN FRUCTOSE BE USED IN SOMERSIZING? |
| A: I used to have fructose on the Funky Food list, because I thought it would spike your insulin, but since then we have found out that certain types of fructose will only cause moderate rises in blood sugar. Use pure crystalline fructose in moderation only. If you use too much, you could have a problem. SomerSweet contains a small amount of fructose, but since SomerSweet is concentrated, you only get a trace amount. |

Q: I AM CONFUSED ON THE SUGARS WE ARE LOOKING FOR ON THE INGREDIENTS LABEL. AREN'T THERE SEVERAL DIFFERENT NAMES FOR SUGAR, SUCH AS SUCROSE, ETC? CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT SOME OF THEM ARE? I AM TRYING REAL HARD TO DO THIS CORRECTLY BUT AM UNSURE ON HOW TO L |
| A: Here are some of the other names for sugar: Sucrose, Refined sugar, High fructose corn syrup, Dextrose, Glucose, Honey, Maltose, Concentrated fruit juice, Confectioner's (powdered) sugar, Barley Malt Syrup. |

Q: HOW MUCH SUGAR IS ALLOWED IN CANNED FOOD (CANNED PEAS, SPAGHETTI SAUCE, GREEN BEANS, ETC) AT LEVEL ONE? |
| A: Added sugars are not allowed on level one. Always check the ingredient list for added sugars and avoid products that have them. Some items have natural sugars that will show up on the nutritional panel. That is okay as long as there are none in the ingredients. |

Q: IS SPLENDA OKAY TO USE? |
| A: Splenda will not spike insulin, but it is chemically based and, therefore, should only be used in moderation. It goes in the same category as saccharin; an artificial sweetener that can be used in moderation when you really want something sweet. Just don't overdo it because we don't want the ill effects of chemical sweeteners. I prefer SomerSweet because it's blended with natural, sweet fiber and tastes great. |

Q: WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ABOUT A SWEETENER CALLED STEVIA? |
| A: I have a whole write up on it in GET SKINNY. It's an all-natural sweetener; that part I like. It also has a bitter aftertaste; that part I don't like. And I find it difficult to cook with. SomerSweet doesn't leave a bitter aftertaste and cooks and bakes like a dream. |
