Somersize - Veggies, Veggie Burgers
1. Q: ARE GREEN BEANS CONSIDERED CARBOS OR NOT? I BELIEVE THAT THEY ARE LISTED ONE WAY IN ONE BOOK, AND THE OTHER IN ANOTHER BOOK.
A: Green beans are considered a Veggie.
2. Q: CAN YOU TELL ME WHICH KINDS OF SQUASH ARE ALLOWED. I KNOW WINTER SQUASHES (BUTTERNUT AND ACORN) ARE FUNKY FOODS. HOW ABOUT SPAGHETTI SQUASH?
A: Spaghetti squash is low in starch and therefore on the Veggies list. Look for my recipe in GET SKINNY.
3. Q: DO YOU KNOW OF A SPECIFIC VEGGIE BURGER THAT IS ALLOWED?
A: We have not found a specific veggie burger for Level One. Most are made with a combination of Carbos and Fats. They are suitable for Level Two.
4. Q: I DON'T EAT ANY VEGETABLES, NOT EVEN SALAD. I'VE TRIED THEM BUT I JUST DO NOT LIKE THEM. IS THERE ANY WAY I CAN STILL DO THIS DIET?
A: When you're eating your Pro/Fats meals, it is important to include vegetables, because that's where you're getting your fiber. Also, vegetables provide a small amount of carbohydrate, which is necessary to keep your body balanced. Clearly, we would not recommend just eating meat, cheese, and eggs every day. That's not a healthy, balanced diet. If you absolutely refuse to eat any vegetables, please make sure you are dividing your meals between Pro/Fats and Carbos, and eat fruit in the morning.
5. Q: I HAVE ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT A TOMATO IS A FRUIT, BUT YOU HAVE RECIPES THAT INCLUDE TOMATOES AND TOMATO PRODUCTS. DO YOU CONSIDER IT A VEGETABLE?
A: Tomatoes are technically fruits, but they are lower in sugar than most fruits, so I include them as a vegetable for Somersizing.
6. Q: IS GEM SQUASH LEGAL? IT'S DARK GREEN, ROUND, AND BRIGHT YELLOW INSIDE.
A: Sorry, but this is like pumpkin and considered a Funky Food.
7. Q: IS DELICATA SQUASH LEGAL?
A: Delicata squash, like all winter squash (except spaghetti squash) is a Funky Food, because its too high in starches.
8. Q: IS IT OKAY TO HAVE SPAGHETTI SQUASH WITH MEAT SAUCE ON IT?
A: Absolutely. Yum.
9. Q: IS SAUERKRAUT ALLOWED?
A: Yes, it's a Veggie.
10. Q: IS THE VEGETABLE RUTABAGA ALLOWED?
A: Rutabaga is fairly high in starch and should be included in the Funky Foods. However, it's not as bad as a potato, so if you are doing well on Level One you could incorporate a little without a problem.
11. Q: IS VEGGIE CHILI ALLOWED?
A: Vegetable Chili is usually made from tomatoes, fresh vegetables, and beans. All of these foods fit into the Carbos and Veggies group. Here's the catch: if you are eating Carbos then you may not include any fats on Level One. Most Veggie Chili is made by sautéing the veggies in oil. This will create a minor imbalance with a Carbo meal. (It is fine for Level Two.) Therefore, if you want to sauté your vegetables in oil, make your Veggie Chili a Pro/Fats meal and add cheese and sour cream. For this Pro/Fats option you would not add any beans (or brown rice) to your chili. If you want the beans and brown rice, eliminate any fats (like oil, cheese or sour cream) and make it a Carbo and Veggie meal.
12. Q: IS YUCCA ROOT OKAY TO USE? IS IT A CARBO OR A VEGGIE?
A: Yucca is a starchy root that is a Funky Food.
13. Q: IS CHAYOTE OKAY?
A: I believe chayote has too much starch to be included on the Veggies list. If you're looking for a potato substitute, try celery root.
14. Q: WHAT IS PATTYPAN SQUASH AND WHERE WOULD I BE ABLE TO BUY THIS?
A: Pattypan squash is in the summer squash family. It's green, round, and flattish with a scalloped edge. It looks a bit like a UFO! You should be able to find it in the produce section of most grocery stores.
15. Q: WHAT TYPE OF FOOD ARE CHICK PEAS CONSIDERED?
A: Chick Peas are the same as Garbanzo Beans and are considered a carbo. You can eat them in combination with veggies.
16. Q: WHICH ARE CARBOS AND WHICH ARE CONSIDERED VEGGIES: WAX BEANS, WATER CHESTNUTS, SNOW PEAS?
A: All of these are Veggies.
17. Q: WHY CAN'T WE HAVE PUMPKIN OR ANY OTHER ORANGE SQUASHES?
A: Sorry, these foods are too high in starch. We eliminate starchy foods so that your body is forced to burn your fat reserves as a fuel source, rather than burning the sugars and carbohydrates we eat for fuel.
