In April 2000, I went in for my routine mammogram at USC Norris Center. My doctor, Mel Silverstein, told me everything looked fine. As I was getting dressed, he knocked on my door to tell me about a new, state-of-the-art ultra-sound machine he had just purchased for half a million dollars. He suggested, because of my cystic breasts, that perhaps I should take advantage of this new technology. It seemed like a good idea to me, especially since my sister, Maureen, was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. It was during the ultra-sound examination that the radiologist found a 2.4 cm tumor, hidden deep within my breast. The tissue was immediately sent out for biopsy and within the hour I was told that it, indeed, was malignant. If I had waited until the following year for my next mammogram, it may have been too late to save my life. A lumpectomy followed, in addition to the removal of several lymph nodes. Fortunately, all the cancer was contained inside the tumor. My lymph nodes were completely clean.
My after-treatment has become a controversial subject. I did the complete recommended course of radiation outlined by my physicians. One of my doctors also felt I should have chemotherapy. A second felt it was not necessary and a third was on the fence. I did a lot of research to make my decision and decided, based upon the specifics of my case, that I did not want to have the chemotherapy. In addition, I chose not to take a commonly used after-drug that I felt had risky side effects.
Treatment is a very personal decision and I dont believe anyone can walk in the cancer patients shoes. I chose a combination of conventional and alternative treatments for my cancer after-care. Along with the radiation, I learned about an alternative treatment called Iscador. Iscador is a homeopathic treatment that is a derivative of mistletoe. The research that I read was very impressive. Iscador works best when used as a complement to conventional therapy. They have achieved the best results with tumors, rather than cancers that are spread throughout the body. I have attached a report on Iscador and also a complete bibliography with 8 pages of resources if you would like to learn more about Iscador for yourself.
PLEASE, PLEASE, understand that I have chosen this treatment program based upon the specifics of my case. I am not a doctor or an expert in the medical field. However, I believe in fully understanding the course of my own treatment. Do your own research and consult with your own doctors. I AM NOT RECOMMENDING ISCADOR FOR ANYBODY OTHER THAN MYSELF. I have had several people tell me they want information about Iscador because they dont want to do chemo either. I did not refuse conventional treatment. I used the Iscador as a complement to conventional medicine. IF YOU ARE DEALING WITH CANCER, PLEASE CONSULT YOUR OWN PHYSICIANS AND MAKE YOUR OWN DECISIONS.
Remember, the best cure for breast cancer is early detection. After getting over the shock of having breast cancer, I now feel relieved that it was caught so early. Thank goodness I stick to all my regular check-ups without fail. This time it saved my life. Please have your scheduled mammograms and also ask about ultra-sound, when available.
